RadRunner E-Bike Lawsuits Claim Brakes Are Defective

RadRunner E-Bike Lawsuits Claim Brakes Are Defective

October 18, 2023 — A lawsuit has been filed against Rad Power Bikes by a man who claims that he crashed due to a defective braking system on his e-bike.

The plaintiff, Gary M., is an attorney from Maryland who claims that he was injured in May 2022 while riding a RadRunner e-bike to the grocery store. He was forced to brake hard to avoid a turning car.

“Upon braking, Mr. Mason was thrown over the handlebars – and saw the front wheel flying through the air. Mr. Mason landed on his back, resulting in five broken ribs and a broken clavicle.”

He was hospitalized for 2 nights and spent 6 weeks in physical rehabilitation and physical therapy, according to his lawsuit.

His lawsuit claims that the braking system on his RadRunner E-Bike was dangerously defective due to the combination of disc brakes and a quick-release lever to detach the front wheel.

He claims that this braking system is known to be dangerous because hard braking can cause the front wheel to disengage from the bike frame, resulting in “increased instability or wobbling and even complete dismantling of the bike.”

Other lawsuits have already been filed by people who were injured or died in similar accidents.

One of the most high-profile incidents was a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed by the parents of a 12-year-old girl who died in a crash involving a RadRunner E-Bike. The lawsuit blames her death on a defective braking system, which can cause uncontrollable wobbling.

The lawsuit was filed against Rad Power Bikes on September 15, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington (Seattle) — Case 2:23-cv-01446.
