Regenecare Recall
On December 2, 2020, MPM Medical of Mesquite, Texas, recalled Regenecare HA Hydrogel (Lot #41262) due to a risk of bacteria contamination that could lead to skin infections, sepsis (bloodstream infections), and possibly death.
Why Was Regenecare Recalled?
No injuries were reported. However, “Following two customer complaints of visible contamination, the product was found to be contaminated with the bacteria Burkholderia cepecia,” according to MPM Medical.
What Product Was Recalled?
Regenecare HA Hydrogel is an over-the-counter product that contains 2% lidocaine. It is used on the skin for temporary relief of pain and itching due to minor burns, sunburn, minor cuts, scrapes, insect bites or minor skin irritations.
The product is packaged in 3 oz. plastic tubes and distributed in boxes of 12. It product can be identified by NDC # 66977-107-03, and the lot number 41262 with date 2021-01 on the tube crimp.
What is the Risk?
There is a risk of skin infections for people who use Regenecare HA Hydrogel that is contaminated with B. cepacia. For people with vulnerable immune systems (such as people with cystic fibrosis or cancer patients on chemotherapy), the skin infection is more likely to spread to the bloodstream and cause life-threatening sepsis or death.
Symptoms of Sepsis (Blood Infection)
- Fever
- Difficulty breathing
- Low blood pressure
- Fast heart rate
- Mental confusion
- Death
