SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleeper Recall
January 29, 2020 — Summer Infant Inc. recalled about 46,300 SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleepers because babies can suffocate.
No incidents or injuries were linked to the SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleeper, but the product is an inclined sleeper with a dangerous design that is similar to other products that caused dozens of deaths
What is an Inclined Sleeper?
Inclined baby sleepers and bassinets are advertised to help babies sleep better by preventing acid-reflux, colic, or spitting up. However, the design has proven to be extremely dangerous for babies.
What is the Problem?
Inclined sleepers are dangerous because babies can roll over and suffocate to death when their face gets trapped against the fabric. Even babies who can’t roll over can suffocate if their chin touches their chest and compresses their airway. Inclined sleepers have caused at least 73 infant deaths and over 1,000 incidents or serious injuries.
What Products Were Recalled?
The recall involves the SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleeper inclined sleepers with Model Number 91394. The model number is located on the cross bar tube of the frame between the two upright tubes.
Where Were They Sold?
SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleepers were sold at juvenile product stores and mass merchandisers nationwide — including Amazon and Buy Buy Baby — from March 2017 through December 2019 for about $99.
Safety Warning for SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleepers
Summer Infant initially resisted a recall. On January 16, federal safety officials warned consumers to stop using SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleepers while regulators worked with the manufacturer to facilitate a recall.
Safe Sleep for Babies
Experts recommend that the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard. Caregivers should never add blankets, pillows, or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment. Babies should always be placed to sleep on their back.
