Renthal Clip-On Handlebars Recalled

On September 21, 2017, Renthal voluntarily recalled about 3,000 of the Gen 1 and Gen 2 motorcycle clip-on handlebars because the clamp can crack and fail. There have been 22 reports of cracked clamps.

The problem poses a crash hazard and a risk of serious injuries or deaths. No injuries have been reported, but according to Renthal:

“We have seen this failure mode in the market place and we need to recall this product to prevent risk of injury to our customers.”

What is the Problem?

Tests indicate that the recalled Gen 1 and Gen 2 handlebar clamps are made of a material that is susceptible to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). This problem is caused by a combination of mechanical “tensile” stress and a highly corrosive environment. Renthal has changed the materials on its Gen 3 clip-on handlebars to resist cracking.

What Handlebars Were Recalled?

The recalled handlebars were sold nationwide for about $215 at Renthal motorcycle dealers between April 2009 and July 2017.

Renthal Gen 1 handlebars have a golden 40-mm tube with a black clamp and texturized gray end cover. Renthal Gen 2 handlebars have a silver 20-mm tube with a black tip on one end and a two-screw clamp on the other end. Both are marked with the word “Renthal.”

What Should I Do?

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled handlebars and contact Renthal to return the products and get a free replacement. For more information, call Renthal toll-free at 877-736-8425 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday or online at www.RenthalRoad.com and click “Clip-on Recall” in the middle of the page.
