Woman With Chronic Leukemia Files Roundup Lawsuit

In September 2015, a woman who was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) after exposure to Roundup filed a lawsuit (PDF) accusing Monsanto of failing to warn about the risk.

The lawsuit was filed by Judy Fitzgerald, a woman who was routinely exposed to Roundup while working at N&O Horticulture Products in New York between 1994 and 1998. On several occasions, she became ill within hours of exposure.

The lawsuit was filed on September 22, 2015 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York — In Re: Judy Fitzgerald v. Monsanto Co.Case No. 2:15-cv-05494.

Risk of Leukemia From Roundup

In 2015, Roundup was classified as a “probable human carcinogen” by a cancer-research agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). The experts cited studies linking Roundup to blood cancers and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in farm-workers around the world.

Can Roundup Get Into My Body?

Yes. The herbicide in Roundup, glyphosate, has been detected in the blood and urine of agricultural workers. This proves that it can be absorbed by the human body. Roundup is also known to accumulate in animal tissues, which is why organic cage-free eggs had some of the highest levels of glyphosate in recent tests.

What Else is in Roundup?

In addition to glyphosate, Roundup also contains POEA, a surfactant chemical that helps glyphosate get into plants, humans, and animals. POEA is known to be toxic to fish and amphibians.

What is Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia?

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is cancer of white blood cells called lymphocytes. These cells are made in bone marrow and fight infections.

Complications of Leukemia

Leukemia cells do not fight infections very well and they survive too long. Over time, they crowd out healthy cells and make it harder for the body to fight infections, get oxygen to the tissues, and control bleeding. Leukemia can also spread to the lymph nodes, spleen, or brain.

Symptoms of Chronic Leukemia

Chronic leukemia usually develops slowly and does not cause any symptoms in its early stages. When symptoms of CLL do appear, they may include:

  • Easy bruising
  • Lump on the neck, armpit, or groin
  • Painless enlarged lymph nodes
  • Fatigue
  • Pain or fullness below the ribs (enlarged spleen)
  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Unexplained weight-loss
  • Night sweats

Tests & Diagnosis for Chronic Leukemia

In about 50% of cases, CLL is diagnosed after the patient has a blood test for another reason and doctors find high white blood cell counts. Blood tests are usually sufficient, but patients may also need to have a biopsy from the bone marrow or lymph nodes.

Treatment for CLL

Treatment for chronic leukemia may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery to remove the spleen, and targeted therapy to kill cancer cells. However, CLL is rarely curable because it grows so slowly that normal treatments are not very effective. When CLL is not causing symptoms, a “watch and wait” approach is recommended instead of treatment.
