FDA inspectors discovered dangerous bacteria in “critical drug production areas in the manufacturing facility,” according to the safety warning. There have been six (6) reports of people who experienced adverse events, vision loss, blurry vision, and other problems after using these eye drops.

Is There a Recall?

Rugby eye drops were recalled on October 31, 2023. The FDA has requested a recall for the Rugby eye drops listed above. Some stores have removed the products, but Rugby eye drops may still be available to purchase in stores and online, the FDA said.

Eye Drop Infections Could Be Deadly

The warning comes just a few months after a deadly outbreak of infections was linked to eye drops. At least 4 people died and more than 80 were infected with Pseudomonas bacteria after using EzriCare Artificial Tears. The deaths occurred when infections spread from the eyes into the bloodstream because the bacteria was highly resistant to antibiotics.

Signs & Symptoms of Eye Infections

According to the CDC, eye infection symptoms may include:

  • Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Redness of the eye or eyelid
  • Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
