What is the problem?

On September 2, Samsung issued a recall for 1 million Note 7 smartphones after 96 reports of batteries overheating or catching on fire, resulting in 26 burn injuries and 55 reports of property damage. Click here to read more.

Despite reports of battery explosions, Samsung said it has no plans to recall the S7 or S7 Edge. The company will investigate reports of explosions, but believes they are very rare.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Lawsuit

On September 8, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed in New Jersey by man who was severely burned by a Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone that exploded in his pocket.

On May 30, Daniel Ramirez was working at a construction site in Ohio. Soon after arriving to the job site, he heard a “whistling and screeching” sound and noticed thick smoke coming from his pocket. He reached into his pocket and immediately burned his fingers.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Explodes in Busy Café

Another Galaxy S7 exploded in a busy cafe in the United Kingdom. Sarah Crocket said it suddenly caught on fire when it was not being charged. She told The Sun:

“It suddenly just expanded in my hand and got really, really hot. I dropped it on the table. Within a few seconds there was smoke everywhere and I jumped out of the way. The whole thing was just barbecued.”

Lithium Ion Battery Explosions

Lithium ion batteries were created in the 1970s, but they did not go mainstream until recent decades. These rechargeable batteries pack a lot of power in a small size, which makes them ideal for smartphones, e-cigarettes, handheld electronics, and cars.

The problem is that the chemicals inside lithium ion batteries are extremely flammable. The risk is low when the battery is manufactured and used properly. However, there are a lot of ways the battery can explode:

  • External damage
  • Internal manufacturing defects
  • Over-charging or using improper chargers
  • High heat
  • Carrying it in a pocket with metal keys, coins, etc.
  • And more
