Galaxy Note 7 Recall
September 1, 2016 — Samsung has issued a global recall and exchange program for 1 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones. The company has received 96 reports of overheating and fires, resulting in 26 burn injuries and 55 reports of property damage. Click here to read more.
What is the Risk?
An estimated 1 out of every 42,000 phones are affected. Samsung blames the problem on a “very rare manufacturing process error” that could cause the battery to overheat.
Galaxy Explosion Burn Victim Files Lawsuit
Samsung has offered to replace the Note 7 with the Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge. Unfortunately, the S7 has also been linked to reports of explosions and fires. On September 8, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed by a man who suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns when the S7 exploded in his pocket. He required extensive skin grafts on his leg.

An exploding Galaxy Core Prime smartphone caused severe burn injuries to the hands of a 6 year-old boy in Brooklyn, according to the New York Post.
Galaxy Note 7 Explosion Causes Car Fire
A dramatic car fire in Port St. Lucie, Florida has been blamed on an exploding Galaxy Note 7. The driver of the car, 55 year-old Clifford Samuels, said he was charging the smartphone when he heard a “pop” and it caught on fire.
Warning Against Using Note 7 On Planes
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a statement warning against using the Galaxy Note 7 on planes or stowing it in checked baggage. No airlines have banned the device, but officials “strongly suggest” turning it off and not charging it on planes.
What is the problem?
Experts believe a manufacturing problem is putting pressure on plates inside battery cells, bringing negative and positive poles into contact. This causes the battery to heat up excessively and catch on fire.
