What Happened?
In March 2025, a recall was issued for SeaBear Salmon Chowder and Alehouse Clam Chowder in plastic pouches due to a risk of botulism. No illnesses were reported, but a packaging issue could pose a risk of contamination with bacteria that causes botulism.
Botulism Risk Linked to Defective Plastic Pouches
SeaBear warned that the plastic pouches may not be sealed properly, which could allow for contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism. The recall explains further:
“SeaBear initiated a voluntary recall after they became aware of a pouch seal issue from a customer complaint. Upon further investigation, they identified a mechanical issue with equipment, which caused seals to not fully bond and made some pouches leak.”

What is Botulism?
Botulism is one of the most dangerous types of food poisoning because it can cause paralysis, breathing failure, and death. People can get sick by eating food that is contaminated with a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, which is widespread in the environment.
Botulism bacteria can survive in low-oxygen environments, such as canned foods and seafoods, where it produces a powerful nerve toxin.
Eating just a tiny sip of a food that is contaminated with this toxin can cause botulism. The symptoms typically appear within 12 to 36 hours after eating food that contains the botulinum toxin, but sometimes as soon as a few hours, or as late as 10 days after exposure.
What Happens When You Get Botulism?
The classic symptoms of Botulism include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, muscle weakness that goes down the body. Left untreated, botulism can cause paralysis of the breathing muscles, and death due to an inability to breathe.
