October 8, 2015 — The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Senator Harry Reid has sued the manufacturer of an exercise band that caused severe injuries to his eye and face.
The lawsuit (PDF) was filed in Clark County District Court against manufacturers of the TheraBand. They are accused of negligence for failing to warn people — especially the elderly and people with hand or foot injuries — about the risks of using an exercise band.
Reid was exercising at his home in Nevada with a TheraBand resistance exercise band in January 2015. The band was mounted to a sturdy object in his bathroom. While in use, it “broke or slipped out of Mr. Reid’s hand, causing him to spin around and strike his face on a cabinet.”
According to the lawsuit, Reid suffered “loss of vision in his right eye, a concussion, broken orbital bones, severe disfigurement and bruising to his face, hand injuries, facial lacerations, scarring, and broken ribs.”
Reid denies that health problems had anything to do with his decision not to seek re-election. He is currently Senate minority leader.
In the last few years, exercise bands have boomed in popularity. Meanwhile, dozens of people have suffered serious injuries. Tens of thousands of products have also been recalled for safety hazards.
