UPDATE: Frozen Shrimp Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

In August 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods expanded a recall for more frozen shrimp after at least 9 people were infected with Salmonella Weltevreden in Arizona (2), Michigan (2), Nevada (4), and Rhode Island (1).

Health officials ended their investigation in July 2021, but re-opened the outbreak investigation in August 2021 after more illnesses were reported. The expanded recall now includes frozen shrimp that was sold nationwide from November 2020 through May 2021 at major grocery stores.

Avanti Frozen Foods Recalls Shrimp After Salmonella Outbreak

In June 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods recalled certain bags of frozen, pre-cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp after an outbreak of Salmonella.

Kader Exports Recalls Shrimp for Salmonella Risk

In August 2020, Kader Exports recalled frozen shrimp due to a risk of Salmonella contamination. The recall involves pre-cooked, frozen, peeled, and de-veined shrimp sold in 1lb, 1.5lb., and 2lb. retail bags between February 2020 and May 2020.

The recall involves the following brand-name products:

  • AQUA STAR RESERVE Cooked, Peeled and Deveined, Tail-on, Shripm (1lb-bags)
  • CENSEA Cooked, Tail Off, Shrimp, Peeled and Deveined Shrimp
  • FRESH MARKET Cocktail Shrimp
  • KIRKLAND Signature Cooked, Peeled and Deveined, Tail-on and Tail-Off (2lb-bags)
  • UNISTAR White Shrimp Cooked
  • TOPS Cooked Shrimp

AFC Sushi Recalls Supermarket Sushi Shrimp for Vibrio Infection Risk

In March 2020, AFC Distribution Corp. (also known as AFC Sushi) recalled Cooked Butterfly Tail-On Whiteleg Shrimp (Sushi Ebi), Lot #2019.10.02, utilized in various prepared menu offerings with sell-by dates from 02/19/2020 to 03/13/2020, because it may be contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

AFC is the largest franchisor of supermarket-based sushi bars in the U.S., with over 3,300 sushi bars in retail sectors nationwide.

The recalled shrimp was distributed to retail AFC sushi counters, where it was used to make sushi items at grocery stores, cafeterias, and corporate dining centers.

The products were recalled in the following states: AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, AD, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WV, WY.

What is Vibrio?

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a bacteria found in saltwater that can cause a gastrointestinal illness in people. The symptoms of an infection usually appear within 24 hours, and may include:

  • Watery diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Bloody diarrhea

The illness typically lasts 1 to 7 days. Most people recover on their own without needing medical treatment. A severe illness is rare and occurs most often in people with weakened immune systems.
