July 9, 2014 — Six have been recalled because laboratory analysis by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected hidden pharmaceutical drugs that are illegal ingredients in dietary supplements.
The FDA discovered that all of the supplements contain sibutramine, which was originally sold as a prescription appetite-suppressant called Meridia. The FDA withdrew approval for sibutramine in October 2010 over safety concerns.
Sibutramine can substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse, which poses health hazards for patients with a history of heart problems. The SCOUT clinical trial also linked it to a 16% increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death compared to a placebo. It can also interact with other medications a patient is using.
The FDA also found phenolphthalein, a laxative, in Mix Fruit Slimming. This ingredient was sold over-the-counter for much of the 20th century, but withdrawn from the market after rodent studies found a wide range of carcinogenic (cancer-causing) side effects.
