August 23, 2019 — AWERS, Inc., of Bellevue, Washington, has announced a recall for salmon caviar due to a risk of Botulism.
The recall involves Grained Salmon Caviar 95-g (Sockeye Salmon Caviar) with “BEST BEFORE OCT 07 2020.”
It was distributed in California, New York, Oregon, Washington and possibly other states, as well as Canada.
No illnesses have been reported. The recall was issued after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) tested the product and found that it did not contain a normal amount of salt, which can create an environment that allows the growth of botulism bacteria.
Botulism is a potentially deadly type of food poisoning that is caused by a paralyzing toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. The symptoms may include weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble breathing, and paralysis.
