Specialized Globe Bike Recall for Defective Kinesis Fork

Specialized Globe Bike Recall for Defective Kinesis Fork

September 25, 2012 — The bicycle company Specialized and the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) are announcing a recall of 12,000 Specialized Globe bicycles because the front fork can break. Four incidents have been reported, involving some serious injuries — including facial fractures, head injuries, shoulder injuries, and cuts.

The Globe bicycles come in several models. They are sold with a Kinesis aluminum fork with aluminum alloy steerer tubes, manufactured in China. The problem is that the front fork steerer tube can break. This defect poses a severe risk of injury — especially at high speeds or in road traffic.

Specialized is recalling the following bicycles:

  • Globe Elite
  • Globe Sport
  • Globe Sport Disc
  • Globe Centrum Comp
  • Globe Centrum Elite
  • Globe City 6
  • Globe Vienna 3
  • Globe Vienna 3 Disc
  • Globe Vienna 4
  • Globe Vienna Deluxe 3, 4, 5, 6

Consumers should check to see whether their bicycle is part of the recall. The bikes were sold from July 2007 until July 2012 throughout the United States. It is likely that thousands of these bicycles are still in use. Consumers should check the model name, which is printed in various locations on different bicycles. The “Specialized” logo is emblazoned on the lower frame tube. The products came in several different colors, including bone, khaki, navy, blue, charcoal, gun, silver, black, burgundy, and gold. Each product cost between $550 – $1,100.

Specialized recommends that customers who have purchased the recalled bike should not ride them. The bikes can be returned to an authorized Specialized dealer for a free replacement fork.
