February 25, 2019 — A high school teacher and lacrosse coach from Birmingham Community Charter High School in Van Nuys, California, was arrested in November on multiple charges of child sexual assault and molestation involving at least 13 victims.
LAPD detectives arrested Scott Hughes Silva on November 19, 2018 without incident. Silva pleaded not guilty and was jailed on $595,000 bond.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge also issued a restraining order banning Silva from approaching the victims, Birmingham Community Charter High School, and Daniel Pearl Magnet High School.
According to KTLA 5, authorities began investigating Silva after they received a report of inappropriate sexual conduct.
Silva worked as a science teacher, football kicker’s coach, athletic trainer, and girl’s lacrosse coach, according to the website for the Birmingham Community Charter High School.
Students from Daniel Pearl Magnet High School were eligible to participate on BCCH athletic teams, including girl’s lacrosse.
Lawyers are now conducting a civil investigation to help victims and their families understand how the sexual misconduct occurred and whether it could have been prevented or discovered sooner by school officials.
