440,500 Starbucks Mugs Recalled After 10 Injuries Reported

In March 2024, Nestlé USA recalled about 440,500 metallic mugs included in the 2023 Holiday Starbucks Mug Gift Sets after 10 people were injured.

What is the Problem?

The problems is that the mugs can get extremely hot or break if they are microwaved or filled with hot liquid. This poses burn and laceration hazards.

How Many People Were Injured?

There were 12 reports of the mugs overheating or breaking, resulting in 10 injuries, according to the recall. Nine people suffered severe burns or blisters on their fingers or hands, and one person was cut on their finger. One incident also required medical attention.

How To Identify Recalled Starbucks Mugs

The recall involves metallic Starbucks mugs that were sold in the following gift sets for the 2023 holiday season:

  • Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs
  • Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug
  • Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug
  • Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled Starbucks mugs were sold online and in-store at Target and Walmart, and through Nexcom (military retail outlets) nationwide from November 2023 through January 2024.

What is the Risk?

  • Burn injuries
  • Blisters
  • Scarring and disfigurement
  • Lacerations (cuts)
  • Bleeding
  • Stitches
  • Need for emergency medical care
