Strauss Israel Recalls Elite Chocolate & Candy for Salmonella Risk
In April 2022, Strauss Israel recalled a variety of Elite® kosher chocolate and other candy products in the U.S. due to a risk of Salmonella contamination.
What is the Problem?
No illnesses were reported, but the recall was announced after routine testing by Strauss discovered Salmonella in the manufacturing facility and the liquid chocolate that was used in finished products.
List of Recalled Products
Strauss Israel recalled all product codes for dozens of types of Elite® branded chocolates and candy, including:
- Elite Chocolate
- Elite Cakes
- Elite Wafers
- Energy Grain Snacks
- Energy Chocolate Rice Cakes
- Chewing Gum (Elite®, Must®, Bazooka® brands)
- Toffee Candies

Where Was It Sold?
The products were distributed in the kosher market nationwide and online in he U.S., but primarily in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, and Florida. Some specific products, such as certain milk chocolate coins, were sold at Walmart stores.
Kinder Chocolate Linked to Massive Salmonella Outbreak
The recall comes during a massive international outbreak of Salmonella linked to Kinder chocolates, with at least 150 illnesses reported in 11 countries as of mid-April 2022.
Salmonella Outbreaks in Candy Pose Serious Risk for Kids
The problem with Salmonella contamination in candy is that the victims are more likely to be children under 10 years old, who are far more vulnerable to developing a severe, life-threatening infection. The symptoms may include nausea and vomiting, fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, headache, and more.
