Summit Treestands Recalls Viper Level PRO SD For Fall Hazard

In December 2022, Summit Treestands recalled about 2,555 Viper® Level PRO SD treestands because hunters can fall and suffer serious injuries or death.

The recall was announced after 2 reports of the tree cable dislodging from the cable assembly. No injuries were reported at the time of the recall.

The recall involves the Viper® Level PRO SD climbing treestand with model number SU81140 or SU81141. The model number is not on the treestand itself, but it is in the instruction manual and package.

The recalled treestands were sold nationwide in the U.S. at sporting goods stores and online at www.summitstands.com from January 2022 through October 2022.

What is Viper Level PRO SD?

Unlike other treestands, the Viper Level PRO SD has dials that can change the angle of the stand while a hunter is in the tree. The hunter does not have to climb down to adjust the angle of the platform.

Another 2,900 Summit Tree Stands Recalled for Fall Hazard

In October 2012, Summit Treestands recalled about 2,900 tree stands due to a fall hazard. The recall includes models such as Crush®, Perch®, Stoop®, and Ledge®. The problem is that the strap assembly can fail or dislodge from the tree, which could cause hunters to fall out of the tree. They were sold from July 2012 to August 2012.

What is the Risk?

Falling out of a tree stand can easily cause hunters to suffer broken bones (especially ankles or wrists), paralysis, lacerations, permanent disabilities, and even death.

Tree Stand Injury Lawsuits

Hunters who fall out of a tree can easily suffer catastrophic injuries or death. In recent years, thousands of tree stands have been recalled due to fall hazards. A growing number of lawsuits have also been filed by hunters who were seriously injured, disabled, or the family members of hunters who died.

For example, a jury awarded $18.5 million to a turkey hunter who fell from a Primal Vantage® treestand when the straps broke. He was paralyzed and suffers from excruciating pain as a result of the fall.

In another lawsuit, a jury in Indiana awarded $157 million to the widow of a hunter who was found dead, hanging from a treestand made by Ol’ Man Tree Stands. The manufacturers never showed up for the trial.
