Overview
Tandem Bipolar Hip System is a partial hip replacement manufactured by Smith & Nephew. It is used to replace half of the hip joint (also known as hemiarthroplasty) in which only the femoral head or “ball” of the damaged hip is replaced.
What is the problem?
Some implants were manufactured with a retainer groove that is out-of-specification. When a surgeon assembles the pieces before a surgery, the components will not “click” together. If a misaligned device is implanted in a patient, it could break suddenly and require revision surgery.
Tandem Bipolar Hip Recall
September 12, 2016 — A recall was issued for unused Tandem Bipolar Hip Systems because the implant can detach after surgery.
Implant May Detach After Surgery and Require Surgery
Smith & Nephew has identified three possible outcomes that could be caused by a defective implant:
- Device does not assemble properly
- Head does not move freely because it is too tight
- Parts break at a later time (usually within a few weeks)
The first two scenarios probably will not cause an injury because the surgeon should notice problems with the device before it is implanted. However, in the third scenario, a patient will experience severe pain and require surgery.
Recommendation for Patients
If the hip detaches, patients will immediately experience severe pain, limited mobility, and loss of range-of-motion. Patients who are not experiencing problems should follow up with their orthopedic surgeon. Routine revision surgery is not recommended.
