What is Technivie?
Technivie cures over 90% of adults with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype-4 infections within 12 weeks. It is manufactured by AbbVie Inc. and it was approved in July 2015.
Who Should Not Take Technivie?
Technivie is not for patients with cirrhosis, which is liver scarring (fibrosis) that permanently decreases liver function. Technivie is also not for patients with moderately or severely decreased liver function (Child-Pugh Class B & C) due to risk of toxicity.
Common Side Effects of Technivie
The most common side effects of Technivie are fatigue, itching, weakness, lack of energy, nausea, and trouble sleeping. These side effects overlap with the symptoms of liver injury from Technivie.
Symptoms of Liver Damage
Get medical attention immediately if you have symptoms of liver toxicity from Technivie — fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, yellow eyes or skin (jaundice), or light-colored stools.
FDA Warns of Serious Liver Injury Risk
In October 2015, the FDA issued a Safety Warning that Technivie can cause serious liver injury, liver failure, transplant, or death. The injuries mostly occurred in the first 1-4 weeks of treatment. Most victims already had advanced cirrhosis. Technivie is not recommended for these patients.
Label Updates Strengthen Warnings
The label on Technivie has been updated to emphasize that it is not approved for patients with cirrhosis or even moderately reduced liver function due to the risk of liver toxicity.
Technivie Lawsuits
Technivie is not for patients with cirrhosis or hepatic impairment. That includes a lot of people with hepatitis C who are desperate for a cure. Serious injuries have occurred in patients who should not have been on Technivie due to their advanced liver disease. Our lawyers are concerned that AbbVie did not adequately warn about side effects. If you were injured, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit.
Liver Injury Risks of Technivie
- Cirrhosis
- Poor liver function
- Inflammation
- Acute hepatitis
- Hepatic decompensation

What Does the FDA Recommend?
Doctors should closely monitor patients for symptoms of worsening liver disease — swelling due to fluid (ascites), brain damage (hepatic encephalopathy), internal bleeding (variceal hemorrhage), and/or elevated liver enzymes in the blood (direct bilirubin or ALT).
How Does Technivie Work?
Technivie contains a combination of three new medications that stop the virus from replicating — ombitasvir, paritaprevir and ritonavir — plus an older drug called ribavirin. These medications are direct-acting antivirals (DAA) that attack specific steps in the life-cycle of a virus.
Technivie vs. Viekira Pak
Technivie and Viekira Pak are both sold by AbbVie for hepatitis C, but Technivie is not approved for patients with scarring and poor liver function (cirrhosis). Viekira Pak is approved for patients with cirrhosis, but only genotype-1 infections, and the combination of medications is different.
