Tesla Powerwall Recall

In November 2025, Tesla recalled about 10,500 Tesla Powerwall 2 units after reports of the lithium-ion battery cells overheating and catching on fire, which “can cause death or serious injury due to fire and burn hazards.”

How Many Fires Were Reported?

In the U.S., Tesla said the recalled Powerwall 2 units were linked to 22 reports of overheating, including 6 reports of smoking and 5 reports of fires resulting in minor property damage.

There were also reports of fires and overheating incidents in Australia, which also resulted in “minor property damage.” No injuries have been reported.

What is the Problem?

The urgent safety recall involves a specific batch of Tesla Powerwall 2 home-battery units. There is a manufacturing flaw in a subset of lithium-ion battery cells from a 3rd-party supplier. This component can fail, which may result in uncontrollable overheating of the battery.

According to the recall:

“The lithium-ion battery cells in certain Powerwall 2 systems can cause the unit to stop functioning during normal use, which can result in overheating and, in some cases, smoke or flame and can cause death or serious injury due to fire and burn hazards.”

What is the Tesla Powerwall 2?

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is a home-energy storage system that is usually installed alongside solar panels. The system is designed to store surplus solar power to use when the sun isn’t shining, and provide it to a home or charging station for an electric vehicle (EV).

When Were They Sold?

Tesla Powerwall 2 Systems were sold in the U.S. from November 2020 through December 2022 for about $8,000. They have a total capacity of 14 kWh. The model number “Powerwall 2” is printed on the nameplate label on the side of the unit.

Why Do Lithium-Ion Batteries Explode?

The heart of the problem is something called a “thermal runaway,” which is a dangerous problem in which the temperature rises uncontrollably inside a lithium-ion battery cell. This produces a “domino effect,” in which one overheating cell causes the adjacent cells nearby to overheat, until it catches on fire or violently explodes.

What is the Risk?

The fires involving the recalled Tesla Powerwall 2 units were linked to “minor property damage,” but there is a risk of explosions that may result in significant property damage, severe injuries, or even death.

What is Tesla Doing?

Due to the seriousness of the problem, Tesla is trying to minimize the danger by remotely discharging all of the affected Powerwall 2 units, which will drain the energy from the battery to 0%.

Tesla said it will notify customers through the Tesla app. You can check the app for a message showing that it has been remotely deactivated: “Powerwall Disabled: Your Powerwall will be replaced.”

Tesla said it will reach out to customers to have the affected Powerwall 2 units removed and replaced at no cost to customers.

September 2025 Tesla Powerwall 2 Recall in Australia

The recalls actually began in September 2025, when Tesla recalled an unspecified number of Powerwall 2 units installed in Australia after several reports of units overheating, catching on fire, or smoking.

According to the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission, there were “reports of Powerwall 2 units with the affected battery cells smoking or emitting flames, resulting in minor property damage.”

What Should I Do?

Tesla customers can visit the recall website for more information at: https://www.tesla.com/support/energy/powerwall/own/powerwall-2-replacement.

Customers will be notified about the recall through the Tesla app. Tesla is offering free removal and replacement of the Powerwall 2. Tesla or a Certified Installer will reach out to affected customers.
