December 14, 2017 — A man from Texas who was diagnosed with lymphoma after 20 years of using Roundup (glyphosate) weed-killer has filed a lawsuit against Monsanto.
The lawsuit was filed by Kevin M., a man who accuses Monsanto of failing to warn about the risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from exposure to Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate.
He says Monsanto should have known about the risk of lymphoma, but failed to place precautionary warnings on Roundup.
He started using Roundup in around 2001 and says he was regularly exposed to it because Monsanto advertised it as “safer than table salt.” As a result, he did not take precautions to prevent exposure.
He did not become aware of the potential link between Roundup and cancer until 2015, when glyphosate was upgraded to a “probable human carcinogen” by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The lawsuit states:
Despite the fact that Defendant knew or should have known that Roundup caused, or could cause, unreasonably dangerous side effects, Defendant continued and continues to market, manufacture, distribute, and/or sell Roundup to consumers, including the Plaintiff.”
Monsanto is now facing hundreds of lawsuits from farmers, agricultural pesticide applicators, farm-workers, gardeners, and other individuals who were diagnosed with cancer after using Roundup.
The lawsuit was filed on November 17, 2017 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri — Case No.: 4:17-CV-2728.
