What is the problem?

Early results from an ongoing study in Botswana found that HIV-positive women who took dolutegravir just before they got pregnant or early in their pregnancy had a higher risk of birth defects.

Dolutegravir is an ingredient in Triumeq, Tivicay, and Juluca.

Tivicay Birth Defects

Tivicay is associated with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. These birth defects occur in the first few weeks of pregnancy when the spinal cord and brain do not form correctly. Babies may have severe disabilities, such as paralysis, bran underdevelopment, or death.

What is Tivicay?

Tivicay® is a once-daily pill that contains dolutegravir, an integrase inhibitor that prevents the HIV virus from infecting cells. This helps reduce the amount of HIV in the body. Tivicay is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and it was approved by the FDA in August 2013.

FDA Warning for Tivicay Birth Defects

May 18, 2018 — The FDA published a Safety Communication to alert the public that serious cases of birth defects involving the brain, spine, and spinal cord occurred in babies born to women who used dolutegravir.

The FDA is asking women of childbearing age to switch to another HIV medication or use birth control if they are taking dolutegravir. The FDA is also recommending that pregnant women should switch to another HIV medication.

“Neural tube defects happen early in pregnancy, before many women even know they are pregnant. For this reason, women of childbearing age should talk to their health care professional about other non-dolutegravir-containing antiretroviral medicines.”

Neural Tube Birth Defects

A neural tube birth defect occurs when the spinal column fails to fuse together during the first month of fetal development. This can allow amniotic fluid to damage the brain, spine, and spinal cord, resulting in severe disabilities, paralysis, or death.

Types of Neural Tube Birth Defects

  • Spina bifida
  • Meningocele
  • Myelomeningocele
  • Anencephaly
  • Encephalocele
  • Iniencephaly
