Viread Class Action Lawsuit Filed in California
In May 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed against Gilead Sciences on behalf of everyone who took Viread and other HIV medications that contain an ingredient called Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF).
What is TDF?
TDF is an old version of Tenofovir that must be taken in high doses to be effective. Unfortunately, TDF also accumulates in the bones and kidneys, increasing the risk of side effects. Gilead now recommends that patients take a new low-dose version of Tenofovir called TAF (Tenofovir Alafenamide) because it has a lower risk of side effects.
Did Gilead Delay Selling Safer HIV Drugs?
The lawsuits accuse Gilead Sciences of intentionally delaying development of TAF to maximize profits on Viread and other HIV drugs containing TDF, which caused patients to suffer more bone loss, tooth decay, and kidney side effects.
According to one lawsuit, Gilead knew as far back as 2001 that TSF was “…highly toxic in the doses prescribed and risked permanent and possibly fatal damage to the kidneys and bones.”
What is the problem?
The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but we are not currently filing a Viread class action lawsuit. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits for people who took Viread and developed severe side effects.

About Class Actions
Class action lawsuits are typically filed on behalf of a large group of people (or “class”) when everyone has the same legal claim. However, class actions can have disadvantages for people with far more serious injuries than the average plaintiff, because everyone in a class action typically shares the payout equally.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
Our law firm specializes in holding pharmaceutical companies accountable for selling dangerous medications and failing to warn about side effects. If you were injured by Stribild, we may be able to help you file a lawsuit and seek compensation for your injury, medical expenses, and more.
