Utz Recalls Zapp’s & Dirty Potato Chips for Salmonella Risk

In May 2026, Utz Quality Foods recalled certain limited varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips after the company was notified that a seasoning containing dry milk powder may contain Salmonella.

The dry milk powder was sourced from California Dairies, Inc. and supplied by a third-party supplier. According to the FDA announcement, the affected seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella prior to use, but Utz is recalling the chips out of an abundance of caution based on the ingredient supplier’s recall.

The voluntary recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the FDA. To date, no complaints of illness have been reported to Utz in connection with the recalled chips.

What is the Risk?

According to the FDA, Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

In rare cases, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
