What is a Pressure Cooker?

Pressure cookers are useful kitchen tools for cooking food fast and efficiently. They consist of a sealed pot that traps steam created by boiling liquid. The pressure is not greater than a can of soda and “explosions” generally do not rupture metal. The real danger is when boiling-hot foods stick to your skin and clothes, causing severe burns.

Tristar Products, Inc. — the “As Seen on TV” product company — sells the Power Pressure Cooker XL. It has not been recalled and is still sold at major retailers like Target, Wal-Mart, and Bed Bath & Beyond.

“He started to open it, and it blew out everything. … He burned his arms completely, and when he removed the clothes, shorts, his leg also was burned.”

The incident occurred in October 2014, when Lili Kekteva and her husband were making dinner. He opened the lid and spewed hot soup everywhere, causing 2nd-degree burns from his elbows to his fingertips. Lili also suffered burns and swelling on her hand.

Another Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Filed in Texas

CPSC Reports of Power Pressure Cooker Explosions

Several explosions involving Tristar Power Pressure Cookers have been reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), including:

  • March 2016 — Report — Lid did not stay locked until the pressure was released. It blew off and burned a woman.
  • October 2015 — Report — Woman sent to the emergency room with severe burns after the lid blew off and burned her with hot pea soup.
  • October 2015 — Report — A woman was burned when the lid blew off. The pressure was not entirely released by the valve.
  • And more

Why Do Pressure Cookers Blow Up?

There are two main ways a pressure cooker might blow up. Most new products have a safety valve that releases pressure and prevents it from blowing up. The valve can get clogged after over-filling the pot or cooking foods that froth and sputter. Pressure cookers can also blow up if the seals fail or if the lid is opened before releasing the pressure.

Pressure Cooker Class Action

Several lawsuits have already been filed by victims of pressure cookers, but not as part of a class action lawsuit. Instead, they are individual lawsuits. Our trial lawyers are filing individual lawsuits so we can focus on helping people with severe injuries seek compensation for their medical expenses, permanent scarring, and more.
