June 27, 2019 — Former USC gynecologist George Tyndall was arrested yesterday on 29 felony sexual assault charges involving 16 patients who claim they were violated during exams.
LAPD arrested Tyndall at his home near USC and confirmed that he was armed with a .32 caliber revolver. He complained of chest pains during the arrest and was hospitalized. Bail was set at $2.1 million and he faces up to 53 years in state prison if convicted on all charges.
The charges include 11 counts of sexual battery by fraud, in which he is accused of touching patients inappropriately for his own sexual arousal while claiming his actions were for “professional purposes.”
He also faces 18 counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person.
LAPD reported that the victims range in age from 17 to 29 years old. Most of them were students at USC who saw Tyndall for routine exams from 2009 to 2016 while he was a full-time staff gynecologist.
Former colleagues report that Tyndall routinely inserted his fingers into patients before using a speculum, going against standard medical procedures, and took unnecessary photographs of patients’ genitals.
Patients also reported that he would force them to get completely naked for exams and watch them undress, use his ungloved fingers to penetrate them, groped their breasts, and made inappropriate sexual or racist comments during exams.
Over 700 women have now come forward with complaints against Tyndall and USC, accusing the university of ignoring complaints for years and attempting to cover up his abuse of patients.
