UPDATE: A new law in California gives women until the end of 2020 to file independent sex abuse lawsuits against USC’s former gynecologist George Tyndall. Click here to read more.
July 24, 2018 — Over 225 women have now filed lawsuits against USC over Dr. George Tyndall, a gynecologist who is accused of sexually abusing women during exams.
Yesterday, 51 more women filed lawsuits in Los Angeles Superior Court accusing USC of ignoring complaints and failing to protect them from Tyndall.
The time-frame of their accusations ranges from the 1980s to 2016, shortly before USC allowed Tyndall to resign with a financial payout.
USC is now facing another settlement payout that could cost the university and its insurers hundreds of millions of dollars. In May, Michigan State University agreed to a $500 million settlement with 332 women who were sexually abused during exams by Dr. Larry Nassar.
Rick Caruso, Chair of the USC Board of Trustees, said he hoped a settlement could occur without depositions and trials that would require Tyndall’s patients to publicly describe their sexual abuse.
Tyndall was the subject of repeated complaints throughout his career, but officials at USC allowed him to continue examining students until a frustrated nurse reported him to the campus rape crisis center in 2016.
Hundreds of women have come forward to accuse Tyndall of using his ungloved and unclean fingers to penetrate their vagina during exams, watching them get undressed, forcing them to completely undress and lie naked on a table for full-body exams, taking inappropriate photographs, and making sexual comments and racist comments.
