FDA Investigates Risk of Radioactive Walmart Shrimp

In August 2025, the FDA warned people not to eat Walmart Great Value® Raw Frozen Shrimp that may be radioactive due to Cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers from Indonesia.

How To Identify Walmart Shrimp in FDA Warning

The potentially radioactive shrimp products were sold at Walmart in AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MO, MS, OH, OK, PA, TX, and WV. The FDA warning involves the following products:

  • Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp: lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
  • Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp: lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
  • Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp: lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

What Happened?

The FDA said it is investigating radioactive Cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products that were processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods) of Indonesia.

The FDA began testing foods after the U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) detected radioactive Cesium-137 in shipping containers at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami.

Breaded Shrimp Tests Positive for Radioactive Cesium

The FDA tests confirmed “the presence of Cs-137 in one sample of breaded shrimp,” according to the warning. The contaminated shipping containers and shrimp products were denied entry to the U.S.

Did Anyone Get Sick?

No illnesses or injuries have been reported, and no products sold in stores have tested positive for radioactivity yet. However, the FDA confirmed that Walmart did receive some shipments of raw frozen shrimp that “may pose a safety concern” due to Cesium-137 contamination.

Eating Radioactive Shrimp May Increase Cancer Risk

An elevated risk of cancer is the primary safety concern from eating radioactive shrimp products, according to the FDA. This is due to repeated exposure to low levels of radioactive Cesium-137 in food, which may cause “damage to DNA within living cells of the body.”

The FDA further explained the health risks of eating radioactive shrimp:

“FDA has concluded that the level detected in the breaded shrimp sample could represent a potential health concern for those exposed to this level of Cs-137 from consumption of the shrimp over an extended period of time combined with radiation that exists in the environment and from other sources such as medical procedures.”

Where Was The Shrimp Sold?

The potentially radioactive Great Value® Raw Frozen Shrimp was sold at Walmart stores in 13 states, including:

  • Alabama (AL)
  • Arkansas (AR)
  • Florida (FL)
  • Georgia (GA)
  • Kentucky (KY)
  • Louisiana (LA)
  • Missouri (MO)
  • Mississippi (MS)
  • Ohio (OH)
  • Oklahoma (OK)
  • Pennsylvania (PA)
  • Texas (TX)
  • West Virginia (WV)

What Should I Do?

If you recently bought one of the impacted lots of Great Value® Raw Frozen Shrimp at Walmart, throw it away. Do not eat or serve it.

If you suspect you have been exposed to elevated levels of radioactive Cesium-137, talk to your healthcare provider.
