Study Links Wegovy and Risk of Blindness
In July 2024, a rare disease that can cause blindness was linked to semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, in a study that was published in JAMA Ophthalmology.
What Happened?
The researchers found that diabetic patients who used semaglutide were 4.28-times more likely to be diagnosed with a rare eye disease called NAION (Non-arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy).
What is NAION?
NAION is also known as an “eye stroke” because it is caused by a lack of blood-supply to the optic nerve.
The optic nerve is the connection between the brain and the eye. Without a blood supply, tissue in the optic nerve is damaged, resulting in vision loss and permanent blindness.
Signs & Symptoms of NAION Blindness
Vision loss due to NAION typically occurs suddenly, without any pain, and only in one eye. In many cases, patients wake up in the morning and notice significant vision loss that does not get better. NAION may cause the following warning signs and symptoms:
- Vision loss in one eye
- Vision loss is painless and occurs suddenly
- Darkened area of visual field
- “Shadow” on upper or lower half of visual field in one eye
- Blindness
- Doctor may notice swelling of the optic nerve
- Blindness
- Vision does not improve over time
Wegovy Prescribing Information: Warnings for Vision Loss
The Wegovy Prescribing Information warns about changes in vision in people with type-2 diabetes: “Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in vision during treatment with WEGOVY.” The symptoms of low blood sugar may include blurred vision.
