What is Wegovy?
Wegovy® is a once-weekly injection medication that contains semaglutide. This is the same active ingredient as Ozempic®, but the difference is that Wegovy contains a higher dose of semaglutide and it is primarily used for weight-loss and long-term weight management. Wegovy can also treat type-2 diabetes.
Lawyers Seeking to Consolidate Wegovy Lawsuits in MDL
In December 2023, lawyers asked judges to establish a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) to centralize all Wegovy lawsuits nationwide into a single federal court, under one judge. This MDL would help lawyers coordinate lawsuits involving stomach paralysis and other side effects of GLP-1 diabetes drugs, including Wegvovy, Ozempic, and others.
What is MDL?
The Multi-district Litigation (MDL) helps improve efficiency and streamline the litigation process when pharmaceutical companies are facing a large number of lawsuits involving people who were injured by a medication.
One of the most crucial parts of the MDL process is the “bellwether trials.” These trials involve a few cases that are selected to go in front of a jury. The outcome of each trial helps lawyers resolve other cases with similar facts and circumstances.
What is the Problem With Wegovy?
Wegovy is known to slow down digestion, which is why “delayed gastric emptying” is on the warning label. The problem is that some users have reported a severe complication called stomach paralysis (also known as “gastroparesis”) when the movement of food from their stomach to their intestines was too slow, resulting in extreme nausea.
Digestive Problems Linked to Wegovy
- Stomach paralysis
- Gastroparesis
- Gastric stasis
- Ileus (lack of movement of food through the intestines)
- Intestinal pseudo obstruction
- Severe nausea
- And more
Lawsuits Claim Wegovy Causes Stomach Paralysis
Stomach paralysis (gastroparesis) has been reported by many patients on GLP-1 diabetes drugs, including Wegovy and Ozempic. In some cases, patients suffered extremely slow digestion, which resulted in symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, pain, bloating, and more.
What Do Lawsuits Claim?
Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company that makes Wegovy, is facing lawsuits from people who claim that the drug-maker failed to adequately warn patients about the risk of stomach paralysis.
