Study Links Ozempic and NAION, Eye Disease That Can Cause Blindness
In July 2024, a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology warned that patients on Ozempic (semaglutide) may be more likely to develop NAION, a rare eye disease that can lead to blindness.
What is NAION?
Non-arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) is an eye disease that is caused by a loss of blood supply to the optic nerve. It causes sudden, painless vision loss in one eye. In severe cases, NAION can lead to blindness.
What Are Risk-Factors for NAION?
NAION is sometimes called an eye stroke. In many cases, patients wake up in the morning and notice significant vision loss in one eye.
NAION may be caused by a loss of blood flow to the optic nerve due to naturally lower blood pressure while sleeping. NAION is more likely in patients with risk-factors like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, smoking, kidney disease, and more.
How Does NAION Cause Blindness?
NAION causes a loss of blood-supply to the front part of the optic nerve, which causes it to swell. This can result in vision loss. After the swelling goes away, the optic nerve may be permanently damaged.
Blindness May Be Permanent
In severe cases, NAION can lead to permanent blindness. This is due to a lack of blood-supply to the optic nerve, which connects the eye and the brain. The lack of blood and oxygen causes irreversible damage to the optic nerve, which results in vision loss and blindness.
Signs & Symptoms of NAION
- Painless, sudden vision loss in one eye
- Vision loss remains stable, without getting better
- Dark area of visual field
- Darkened “shadow” over upper or lower half of vision
- Blindness
- Optic neuropathy
- Swelling of the optic nerve
Treatment for NAION
There are no medications or other treatments that can cure NAION, improve vision that has already been lost, or prevent NAION from occurring in the other eye. However, doctors may recommend treatments for other diseases that are known to be risk-factors for NAION, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
What Medications Contain Semaglutide?
- Ozempic (semaglutide injection for type-2 diabetes)
- Rybelsus (semaglutide pill)
- Wegovy (higher-dose semaglutide injection used for weight-loss)
