June 11, 2014 — The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for gas boilers manufactured by Weil-McLane because a cap on the manifold can crack, release gas, and potentially cause a fire and/or explosion.
Weil-McLane says they have received 11 reports of the manifold caps cracking. The problem has not caused any injuries or fires, but it could potentially cause serious property damage or deaths.
The recall includes Weil-McLain Ultra models 80, 105, 155 and 230 MBH gas-fired boilers that are used for space heating. About 7,900 units were sold in the United States and 540 in Canada.
The affected models have serial numbers ranging between CP 6557046 and CP 6955985. The numbers are located on a bar-coded label on the lower right side of the boiler behind a panel.
Weil-McLane has already notified customers with a letter (PDF), including the following warning:
“Weil-McLain has received information indicating that a cap on the boiler manifold tube for certain Weil-McLain Ultra 80, Ultra 105, Ultra 155, and Ultra 230 condensing, high-efficiency, gas-fired boilers manufactured after June 1, 2012 and prior to March 11, 2014, can crack and allow gas to leak. If this happens, a risk of fire or explosion may arise.”
