Schneider Electric Recalls SurgeLoc Surge Protectors for Fire Risk
On October 28, 2020, Schneider Electric recalled about 47,250 SurgeLoc Surge Protection Devices due to a fire hazard. The recall was issued after a report of an arc flash that was not contained in the panel board enclosure.
What is an Arc Flash?
An arc flash is a massive electrical explosion that is caused by a short-circuit. The temperatures of an arc flash can exceed 35,000°F, which can easily ignite fires, melt metal, and cause severe burn injuries or death to anyone standing nearby.
What Products Were Recalled?
The recall involves the Surgelogic™ NQ SurgeLoc™ Surge Protection Device (SPDs) and certain panelboards with this surge protector. The devices were primarily installed in commercial and industrial applications, but possibly some residential applications.
The recalled surge protectors were sold by Schneider Electric distributors from January 2013 through August 2020 and included in factory-ordered panel boards for between $400 and $1,200.
What is the Problem?
Schnieder Electric warns there is a “small possibility that there could be overheating inside the device,” which could lead to a short-circuit and an arc flash. The panel board enclosure is not intended to contain an arc flash, so there is a risk of fire, injury, and property damage.
When Was the Issue Discovered?
Schneider Electric said the first report of a non-contained arc event was in August 2020. The arcing incident caused smoke damage to the wall in a commercial location. No injuries have been reported. The product was immediately put on hold while the issue was investigated.
