October 4, 2013 — USA Today is warning that investigators have been unable to locate Riger Naturals, the Mexican manufacturer of Reumofan, Reumofan Plus, and “WOW” dietary supplements. Investigators found that addresses used by Riger Naturals were fake, the company has lied about ingredients in their products, and many people have reported severe side effects.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Safety Communication in June 2012, warning that Reumofan and Reumofan Plus contain pharmaceutical drugs and they are not “100% all natural,” contrary to the label. They published another warning after finding that the products were re-labeled as another supplement called “WOW” with the same ingredients.
Pharmaceutical ingredients in Reumofan Plus include:
- Voltaren (diclofenac sodium) — Prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) that is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular problems (heart attack, stroke), ulcers, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Robaxin (methocarbamol) — Prescription muscle-relaxant that can cause sedation, dizziness, low blood pressure, and problems operating vehicles or machinery.
- Dexamethasone — Prescription corticosteroid that can increase blood-sugar in diabetics, psychiatric disorders, impair a person’s immune system, and increase susceptibility to infections.
Possible Link Discovered
USA Today found a possible link between Reumofan and a Mexican pharmaceutical company located in Guadalajara. Investigators purchased a bottle of Reumofan containing pills that were stamped with a stylized “M” — the same stamp used by Laboratorios Marcel.
Laboratorios Marcel manufactured a product called Rumoquin N.F., a prescription medication with the exact same pharmaceutical ingredients as Reumofan Plus. Laboratorios Marcel closed last year, but another pharmaceutical company called Laboratorios Schoen was re-opened in the same location.
The owners of Laboratorios Schoen have denied any involvement in Reumofan or Riger Naturals. No one has been able to track down Riger Naturals. It is possible that the company does not actually exist.
