Whole Foods Recalls Dorset Cheese in 7 States for Listeria Risk

In October 2019, Whole Foods recalled Dorset cheese at stores in 7 states due to a risk of Listeria infections. The states include Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

No illnesses were reported. Whole Foods recalled Dorset cheese in response to another recall by Consider Bradwell Farm in Vermont, which included Dorset, Slyboro and Experience cheeses. The recalls were issued after Listeria was found in finished products and the manufacturing facility.

What is the problem?

Cheese is one of the most common sources of food poisoning outbreaks due to Listeria monocytogenes. Unlike most bacteria, Listeria is common in dairy environments and it can grow in a refrigerator or deli counter.

Soft cheeses made from unpasteurized milk are 50 to 160 times more likely to cause Listeria infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). However, even pasteurized cheese made in unsanitary conditions can spread Listeria.

July 3, 2013 — A recall has been issued for Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese products sold at Whole Foods stores in 30 states and Washington D.C. The recall includes Les Frères, Petit Frère, and Petit Frère with Truffles cheeses. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warns that six people in five states were infected with Listeria, including one person who died. All six victims were hospitalized with severe illnesses.

What is Listeriosis?

Listeriosis is an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Infections are rare, but they are often very serious because the bacteria is highly invasive. Complications are often life-threatening for unborn babies of pregnant women, young children, older adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems.

Symptoms of Listeriosis

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Invasive infection
  • Bacterial meningitis (brain inflammation)
  • Bacteremia (blood poisoning)
