September 14, 2016 — A woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using Shower-to-Shower has filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson for failing to warn about the risk.
The lawsuit (PDF) was filed by Shintelle Johnson, a woman from Louisiana who started using Shower-to-Shower for feminine hygiene when she was about 17 years old. She used the product routinely for the next 10 years, until she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
A number of studies linking talc and ovarian cancer were cited in the lawsuit, including one pooled analysis of 18,000 women in 8 studies that found a 20-30% increased risk.
Johnson & Johnson is facing thousands of similar lawsuits in state courts nationwide. On September 29, judges will decide whether to centralize the litigation into one federal court.
Lawyers say thousands more cases may eventually be filed. The size of the litigation skyrocketed after two massive jury verdicts in St. Louis, Missouri. One woman with ovarian cancer was awarded $55 million. The family of a woman who died was awarded $72 million.
Johnson & Johnson is appealing both verdicts and continues to deny any link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.
However, evidence uncovered as part of those trials shows that Johnson & Johnson was aware of health concerns as early as the 1970s. One memo (PDF) from 1992 acknowledges the risk of ovarian cancer. Instead of recommending safety warnings, it recommended increasing marketing efforts toward black and Hispanic women.
