Yellowfin Tuna Recalled After Testing Positive for Salmonella

October 20, 2017 — A recall has been issued for pre-frozen yellowfin tuna loins (or “tuna steaks”) after the FDA reported that a sample tested positive for Salmonella.

The recall involves “Frozen Newport® Tuna Loins” that were distributed to grocery stores and seafood departments in 6 states. The distributor is Relish Foods Inc., of Culver City, California.

The tuna loins were sold at the following grocery stores: Basha’s, Randall’s Fine Meats, Yokes Fresh Market, CalMart, Raley’s, Concord Produce Market, Bel Air Market, Speedy Market, and Nob Hill.

It was sold from August 15 until September 25, 2017 in Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Nevada, Idaho, and Arizona.

The problem is that it may not be easy for consumers to identify the recalled tuna because it was sold from the seafood department. The tuna may have been on a tray covered in clear plastic-wrap, or it may have been sold individually and wrapped in “butcher’s paper” to order.

No cases of Salmonella food poisoning have been reported, but infections with Salmonella can be very serious — or deadly — especially for children, older adults, and people who are sick. The FDA also warns about the following severe complications:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
