October 10, 2018 — At least 14 people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease in another outbreak in New York City.
This is the second outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the Washington Heights-Hamilton Heights area this year.
Health officials are still investigating the cause of the outbreak, with 20 cooling towers tested. One cooling tower was not registered with the city, which means it was not being regularly tested.
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious type of pneumonia (lung infection) that is caused by breathing in the Legionella bacteria in the air. The bacteria grows in warm water.
Outbreaks are usually traced to hot tubs, spas, air conditioning, and buildings with cooling towers or complex water systems.
The symptoms of infection with Legionella include fever, chills, muscle aches, and cough. The most high-risk individuals are those over 50, people with weak immune systems, and cigarette smokers.
