February 20, 2019 — Health officials in Minnesota linked an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease to a spa at the Crookston Inn and Convention Center in northwestern Minnesota.
Investigators with the Minnesota Department of Health determined that 4 people were infected with Legionella bacteria after visiting the hotel between January 22 and January 27, 2019.
None of the victims stayed overnight at the hotel.
The source of the outbreak is still under investigation, but preliminary evidence suggests that the spa or pool area was contaminated.
Hotel management temporarily closed the spa and pool to guests. The hotel is also notifying guests that they may have been exposed to Legionella bacteria if they stayed at the hotel between January 14 and February 13, 2019.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by breathing in Legionella bacteria on mist droplets from water sources, such as hot tubs, showers, pools, fountains, air conditioning systems, and more.
