October 14, 2019 — A deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease has been linked to a hot tub display at the NC Mountain State Fair in Fletcher, North Carolina.
In an update posted on October 10, the North Carolina Department of Health confirmed 134 cases of Legionnaires’ disease or Pontiac Fever, including 2 deaths and 88 hospitalizations.
The NC Mountain State Fair occurred between September 6 and 15, 2019, at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher, North Carolina.
The outbreak was linked to hot tubs at the Davis Event Center of the WNC Ag Center, especially during last five days of the fair.
Legionnaires’ disease is an infection that is caused by breathing in tiny droplets of water in the air that contain Legionella bacteria.
Hot tubs, showers, fountains, and spas that aerosolize water are a common source of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks.
Health officials are warning anyone who attended or worked at the fair to be vigilant for symptoms, such as cough, fever, or shortness of breath. If these symptoms occur, contact a healthcare professional immediately and talk to them about Legionnaires’ disease.
