$55 Million Awarded to Woman Burned by Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker

$55 Million Awarded to Woman Burned by Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker

December 18, 2024 — A jury in Colorado has awarded $55.5 million to a woman who was severely burned by a Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker that was recalled by Sunbeam Products.

The jury found Sunbeam Products and its parent company, Newell Brands, were 90% responsible for her injuries. The woman was found to be 10% responsible, which will reduce the verdict by that amount.

The lawsuit was filed by Georgina P., a woman who suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burn injuries in June 2019 when her Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker (Model Number SCCPPC600V1) exploded.

On the day she was injured, she was cooking beans with a Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker that she bought at Target in Colorado.

About 20 minutes after the beans were done cooking, she went to open the steam-release valve. When she touched the multi-cooker, “it violently exploded, sending scalding hot beans and liquid into Plaintiff’s face and chest, the ceiling, and the surrounding kitchen.”

She was hospitalized with “catastrophic and life-threatening injuries” involving 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns covering 13% of her body area. She underwent excruciating treatment involving approximately 5.3 square feet of amniotic and cadaveric skin grafts, her lawyers said.

She continues to suffer from long-term complications like scarring and disfigurement to her face, chest, abdomen, shoulders, breasts, and upper extremities.

She also suffers from extreme itching, tingling and a lack of sensation in her lips and mouth, trouble regulating her body temperature due to injuries to her sweat glands, and other problems.

Her lawsuit claims that Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands knew as early as 2017 that the lid could open on Crock-Pot Multi-Cookers that were pressurized, resulting in an explosion of hot food and liquid.

In November 2020, nearly 1 million Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cookers were recalled due to a burn hazard. At the time, there were reports of 99 people who were burned when the lid suddenly detached, according to the recall.

Her Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker Lawsuit was filed against Sunbeam Products, Newell Brands, and Target Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado — Case Number 1:21-cv-01915.
