2 Million Black+Decker Garment Steamers Recalled After 82 People Burned

In April 2024, about 2 million Black+Decker Garment Steamers were recalled by Empower Brands after 82 more people were burned. The recall is a major expansion of a recall that was previously announced in November 2022.

Empower Brands is now offering a full refund for all of the recalled Black+Decker Garment Steamers, after dozens of people were burned by garment steamers that had been repaired after the original recall.

According to the expanded recall announcement:

“Since the recall was announced in November 2022, Empower Brands has received 317 reports of hot water expelling from the recalled steamers, including 82 reports of burn injuries, seven of which were second-degree burns. 94 of these incident reports involved units that were repaired as part of the original recall or models featuring the updated design, including 19 burn injuries.”

The expanded recall involves all BLACK+DECKER Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers, including those that were repaired as part of the previous recall in November 2022.

They were sold by Walmart, Target, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond and other stores nationwide, and online from June 2021 through February 2024.

Black & Decker Garment Steamer Recall

In November 2022, about 518,500 Black & Decker Easy Garment Steamers were recalled after dozens of people were burned by hot water spraying, leaking, or shooting out when it was being used.

What is the Problem?

The steamers can expel, spray or leak hot water during use, posing a burn hazard to consumers, according to the recall posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on November 3, 2022.

There were 241 reports of hot water being expelled from the Black & Decker Easy Garment Steamer, including 32 reports of people who were burned. Two people reported serious 2nd-degree burns.

The recall involves Black & Decker Easy Garment Steamers (Models HGS011S, HGS011F and HGS011). The model number is printed on the rating plate on the bottom of the steamer. The power plug blade is also stamped with date codes 102ZJ through 210ZJ.

They were sold nationwide for $16 to $23 between June 2021 and September 2022 at Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, other stores, and online at Amazon.com and other websites.

HSN Clothing Steamer Recall

This is not the first major clothing steamer recall. In May 2021, HSN recalled around 5.4 million My Little Steamer® Clothing Steamers as part of a class action lawsuit settlement. At least 106 people were burned when extremely hot water sprayed or leaked out of the steamer.
