UPDATE: 2 Million Black+Decker Garment Steamers Recalled After 82 More People Burned
In April 2024, about 2 million Black+Decker Garment Steamers were recalled by Empower Brands after 82 more people were burned.
The recall is a major expansion of a previous recall in November 2022. The recalled steamers can expel, spray, or leak hot water during use, posing a burn hazard to consumers:
“Since the recall was announced in November 2022, Empower Brands has received 317 reports of hot water expelling from the recalled steamers, including 82 reports of burn injuries, seven of which were second-degree burns. 94 of these incident reports involved units that were repaired as part of the original recall or models featuring the updated design, including 19 burn injuries.”
2 Million Handheld Garment Steamers Recalled After 23 People Burned
In February 2024, about 2 million Vornado, Steamfast, and Sharper Image Handheld Garment Steamers were recalled after 23 people were burned by hot water shooting or spitting out of the nozzle.
The recall involves three brands of handheld clothes steamers:
- Steamfast Handheld Garment Steamer (model numbers SF-425, SF-435, SF-440, SF-445, and SF-447)
- Vornado Handheld Garment Steamer (model number VS-410)
- Sharper Image Handheld Garment Steamer (model number SI-428).
They were sold nationwide between July 2009 and January 2024 at Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, other stores, online at Amazon.com and other websites.
317,000 Travel Steam Irons Recalled for Fire & Burn Hazard
In April 2023, Vornado recalled about 317,000 Brookstone® and Steamfast® Travel Steam Irons because the cord can be damaged, overheat, catch on fire, and potentially cause burn injuries.
The recalled travel steam irons were produced between January 2008 and March 2017. They were sold at Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Brookstone, other stores and online. The recall involves the following products:
- Steamfast Home and Away Travel Steam Irons with Dual Voltage
- Brookstone Steam Bug Travel Steam Irons
Black & Decker Garment Steamers Recalled After 32 People Burned
In November 2022, Empower Brands recalled about 518,500 Black & Decker Easy Garment Steamers after 32 people reported burn injuries when hot water leaked, sprayed, or shot out. Two people suffered 2nd-degree burns, which may involve blisters or scarring.
The recall includes Black & Decker Easy Garment Steamers (Models HGS011S, HGS011F and HGS011). They were sold between June 2021 and September 2022 at Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon.com, and other stores.
HSN Clothing Steamer Recall
In May 2021, HSN recalled about 5.4 million Joy/JM® My Little Steamer® and My Little Steamer® Go Mini Clothing Steamers due to a risk of serious burn injuries. At least 106 people suffered burn injuries from extremely hot water leaking or spraying out.
Was Your HSN Clothing Steamer Recalled?
The recall involves all models and colors of Joy® or JM® My Little Steamers® sold from January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2020.
The clothing steamers were sold nationwide on the HSN television network, online at www.HSN.com, in stores or online by Amazon, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, Lowes, and more.
What is the Risk?
My Little Steamer® clothing steamers can expel, spray, or leak extremely hot water during use, which can cause serious burn injuries. HSN said it received 227 reports of “hot water spraying or leaking from the steamers,” including 106 reports of burn injuries.
How Many People Were Burned?
The recalled clothing steamers burned at least 106 people, including 8 people who suffered 2nd-degree burns, and 6 people who suffered 3rd-degree burn injuries.
Symptoms & Types of Burn Injuries
- 1st-degree burns: Redness, minor inflammation or swelling, pain, and peeling skin as the burn heals
- 2nd-degree burns: Skin blistering, extreme redness and soreness, may take 3+ weeks to heal and cause skin pigment changes
- 3rd-degree burns:: Burn extends through every layer of skin, may cause nerve damage, and heal with scarring
HSN Clothing Steamer Class Action Lawsuit Settlement
HSN recalled the clothing steamers after a class action lawsuit settlement (https://www.steamerrecallsettlement.com/) that provides a cash payment, refund, or voucher, depending on the type of clothing steamer and when it was purchased.
