August 16, 2024 — Amazon.com and Midea America have been sued by a woman from Texas who was burned by an Instant Pot.
The plaintiff, Maria L., is a resident of San Antonio, Texas, who bought a new Instant Pot Duo Pressure Cooker from Amazon.com in August 2022.
About three weeks later, she was using the pressure cooker to cook food when she tried to open the lid. She suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries” when scalding-hot food was ejected out.
Her lawsuit blames the incident on the failure of the “safety mechanisms” on the Instant Pot — specifically a number of safety features that were advertised to prevent the lid from opening when there was still a dangerous amount of pressure trapped in the unit.
The defendants include Amazon.com Inc., the online retailer who sold her the Instant Pot, and the product’s manufacturer, Midea America Corporation.
The original designer and manufacturer of the Instant Pot, a company known as Instant Brands, has filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.
Her Amazon Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed on August 6, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas (San Antonio Division) — Case 5:24-cv-00864.
