Annie’s Recalls Homegrown Frozen Pizza for Metal Fragments

Annie’s Recalls Homegrown Frozen Pizza for Metal Fragments

January 23, 2013 — Annie’s Inc., a company that markets natural and organic food products, is recalling all of its Homegrown Frozen Pizza products. According to the FDA recall notice, Annie’s states that the recall is a voluntary precautionary measure taken “due to the possible presence of fragments of flexible metal mesh caused by a faulty screen at a third-party flour mill.” The company has already changed their third-party flour supplier.

Annie’s distributes their products to approximately 25,000 stores nationwide. The company is recalling frozen pizza products with a best-by date between January 9, 2013 and September 14, 2014, including:

  • Organic Four Cheese Pizza, 23.5 oz UPC 013562 200016
  • Organic Pepperoni Pizza, 23.6 oz UPC 013562 200009
  • Organic Supreme Pizza, 25.4 oz UPC 013562 200023
  • Organic Spinach and Mushroom Pizza, 25.0 oz UPC 013562 200054
  • Four Cheese Pizza, 22.5 oz UPC 013562 200078
  • Pepperoni Pizza, 22.6 oz UPC 013562 200061
  • BBQ Recipe Chicken Pizza, 23.1 oz UPC 013562 200092

The flour supplier has a process to check for metal fragments in their food, including metal detectors and magnets. However, because the flexible wire mesh is quite small, it may have evaded detection and passed into finished food products. Annie’s has not found any evidence of the mesh in their food products, and no injuries, illnesses, or complaints have been reported.
