Apollo Recalls 3,900 Phantom E-Scooters for Crash & Injury Hazard

In August 2023, Apollo recalled about 3,900 Apollo® Phantom Electric Scooters due to a defective bolt that can cause riders to crash and suffer severe injuries or death. The recall includes the following models:

  • Apollo Phantom V1
  • Apollo Phantom V2
  • Apollo Phantom 60V

How Many People Were Injured?

Apollo said it received 7 reports of the bolt breaking, resulting in the stem detaching or loosening. Three people suffered injuries such as bruising, cuts and abrasions (scrapes). No deaths were reported, but the problem poses a crash hazard and a risk of deadly injuries.

What is the Problem?

According to the recall: “The bolt on the electric scooter can come loose causing the suspension and wheel assembly to separate, posing fall and injury hazards.”

Apollo said it believes the problem can be fixed by replacing the original A2-70 Stainless Steel Bolt with the stronger Grade 12.9 Steel Bolt that is used in the current design of the Phantom model.

The recalled bolt has “A2-70” imprinted on the bolt head.

Apollo warns customers against riding their e-scooters until you have replaced the stem bolt with the Grade 12.9 Steel Bolt. Once replaced, customers should perform preventative maintenance of the bolt every 500 km, tightening the bolt to 40-50 Nm with a torque wrench.

When Were The E-Scooters Sold?

The recall involves Phantom V1, V2, and 60V electric scooters that were sold nationwide from June 2021 through May 2023 for between $2,000 and $2,500.

What Should I Do?

Apollo is asking consumers to immediately stop using the recalled e-scooters and contact the company for a free repair kit. The kit will include a replacement bolt.
