Walmart Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Alleges Severe Burn Injuries
In June 2026, a woman from West Virginia filed a pressure cooker lawsuit against Walmart Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, alleging that a Farberware 7-in-1 programmable pressure cooker that she purchased at Walmart was “defective and unreasonably dangerous.”
What Happened?
According to the lawsuit, she was using the pressure cooker normally on July 4, 2024, when the lid suddenly blew off the pot during normal use and ejected the scalding contents onto her body. She suffered partial-thickness burns that required several medical procedures, including wound debridement. Despite receiving medical treatment, she was left with permanent scarring.
What Is the Alleged Defect?
Her lawsuit claims that the Farberware 7-in-1 is defective because it contains a design flaw that allows the lid to be rotated and removed while the unit is still pressurized, even when it appears that all of the pressure has been released.
Walmart has been selling this pressure cooker product for years, and during that time, Walmart has also advertised numerous safety features. The pressure cooker is marketed as having a large locking lid that is supposed to keep it from opening while pressurized.
The owner’s manual for the Farberwas 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker also describes additional safeguards that are intended to prevent the lid from unlocking until the float valve drops on its own.
Instead, the lawsuit alleges that many of those safety mechanisms failed to prevent the lid from opening. The plaintiff claims that the pressure cooker possessed defects that made it unreasonably dangerous because the lid “can be rotated and opened while the unit remains pressurized.” When that happens, trapped steam and scalding-hot liquid or food can be forcefully ejected onto anyone nearby.
Why Was the Lawsuit Filed in Arkansas?
Walmart is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, and that is where its principal place of business is located. For the purposes of federal diversity jurisdiction, Walmart is treated as a citizen of Arkansas, which is why the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas is a home court for product liability claims that are brought against the company by people who were injured.
In this case, the injured person is a resident of West Virginia, but the lawsuit was filed in Arkansas federal court where Walmart is based.
