What is the Risk?
Babyganics issued the recall after internal testing on the product was positive for Pluralibacter gergoviae, which is a type of bacteria that can cause infections. No infections were reported as of April 19, 2022, but the company said it is “monitoring the situation closely.”
Babies have a higher risk of infection than adults. The bacteria is also opportunistic, which means that it may cause a serious infection in babies who have diaper rash or skin that is broken and irritated.
According to the recall notice posted by Babyganics:
“While infants may be more susceptible than adults, Pluralibacter gergoviae does not usually cause healthy individuals to become sick. However, it may pose a risk of infection to those who are immunocompromised or have broken or irritated skin, such as diaper rash.”
What is Pluralibacter gergoviae?
Pluralibacter gergoviae is a bacteria that is commonly found in the environment, such as plants and soil. In the past, it has been linked to antibiotic-resistant outbreaks in hospitals. It has been a recurrent problem in cosmetics and personal care products.

- Skin swelling (edema)
