UPDATE: Best Buy Recalls 930,000 Insignia Pressure Cookers After 17 People Burned

In October 2023, Best Buy recalled about 930,000 Insignia Pressure Cookers due to a risk of severe burn injuries.

The problem is that the inner pot has incorrect volume markings, which can cause consumers to over-fill the pot, resulting in an explosion of hot food and liquid when the unit is pressurized.

There were 31 reports of hot food or liquid exploding out of the pressure cooker when it was pressurized, including 17 burn injuries. Some of the burns were severe 2nd-degree or 3rd-degree burns, according to Best Buy.

The recall involves 6-qt. and 8-qt. Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cookers with model numbers NS-MC60SS8, NS-MC60SS9, or NS-MC80SS9.

The recall also involves inner cooker pots with model numbers NS-MCRP6NS9 and NS-MCRP6SS9, which were sold separately as replacements.

Best Buy said the “pressure cooker has incorrect volume markings on the inner pot. This can cause consumers to overfill the pot and hot food and liquids to be ejected when the pressure cooker is vented using the quick release method or opened while its contents are pressurized, posing a burn hazard to consumers.”

The recalled pressure cookers were sold at Best Buy stores nationwide and online at www.bestbuy.com and www.amazon.com from October 2017 through June 2023 for between $50 and $120.

Texas Woman Files Insignia Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Against Best Buy

In April 2023, a lawsuit was filed against Best Buy by a woman from Dallas, Texas, who alleges that she was severely burned when she opened the lid on her Insignia Pressure Cooker.

The incident occurred in May 2021 and involved an Insignia 6-Quart Multi-Function Pressure Cooker (Model Number S-MC60SS9).

According to the lawsuit, she was able to easily twist open the lid on her Insignia Pressure Cooker when the unit was still pressurized. This caused its “scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker and onto Plaintiff,” her lawsuit claims.

She accuses the Minnesota-based manufacturer, Best Buy Co. Inc., of selling defective pressure cookers with misleading claims about safety. For example, her lawsuit specifically cites the Owner’s Manual: “Locking lid keeps the cooker closed while it’s pressurized.”

Instead, she claims that the pressure cooker is “dangerously defective” because the lid can be opened when it is under pressure.

The Insignia Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed on April 17, 2023 against Best Buy Co., Inc., in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota — Case Number 0:23-cv-01046.

What is the Insignia Pressure Cooker?

Best Buy manufactures and sells the Insignia® Pressure Cooker, a stainless steel multi-function electric kitchen appliance that comes in 6-Quart and 8-Quart sizes.

The product is advertised to have safety features, such as a “Locking lid: Keeps the lid locked firmly in place once enough pressure builds inside the cooker,” according to the website and the Owner’s Manual.

What is the Problem?

In recent years, dozens of lawsuits have been filed by people who were severely burned by pressure cookers. Nearly all of these lawsuits involve products that were advertised to have a “locking lid” that consumers should not be able to open until it is de-pressurized.

Unfortunately, many consumers have been severely burned when scalding-hot food, liquid, and steam exploded out of their pressure cooker when they were able to twist open the lid before it was safe.

These lawsuits blame the manufacturers for selling defective pressure cookers, failing to recall dangerous products, misleading consumers about the “safety features,” and putting profits ahead of safety.

What is the Risk?

  • Burns and scalds
  • 1st-degree burns (only the outer layer of skin)
  • 2nd-degree burns (outer layer and middle layer of skin)
  • 3rd-degree burns (all layers of skin)
  • Severe pain
  • Skin redness, swelling, blisters, inflammation
  • Skin graft surgery
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Lifelong disfigurement
